Root “Muladhara” Chakra

The Root Chakra, also known under the Sanskrit name “Muladhara”, is the first of the seven primary energy centers in the human body. As the name already says – the Root Chakra is the root and base of all the other chakras. 

According to the system of Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, as well as modern spiritual and holistic practices, the Muladhara Chakra is known as the first of the seven primary energy centers in the human body. Like the root of a tree, the Root Chakra is our root. It’s associated with the foundation of our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Also, it is the center of our survival instincts, security, stability, and connection to the Earth. 

About the Root Chakra's location, color, and element

Our root lays at the base of the spine near the perineum, which is between the anus and genitals, or at the tailbone area. Connected to the earth’s energy, this chakra is grounding us to the physical world and to the planet itself. 

The association with the color red, it is symbolizing vitality, strength, and primal energy. Red also reflects the fiery, intense, and solid nature of this chakra. 

Our root gets associated with Earth and represents grounding, stability, and the physical world. Earth is aligning with the role in helping us feel anchored and secure. The connection to the Earth is vital for our sense of survival and connection to the physical realm. 

Function and Meaning

The Root Chakra not only have a location, a color and an element. Its existence also has a function and meaning: 

  • survival instincts → our sense of safety, security, and stability in the world 
  • grounding → foundation for our energy, linking us to the Earth and the physical world 
  • basic needs → influences our ability to meet our basic needs (food, shelter, and financial security); connected to survival and the physical body 
  • sense of belonging → governs our connection to the family, community, and the Earth itself; tied to our tribal instincts and sense of being rooted in a place or environment 
  • physical strength → governs the lower part of the body (legs, feet, spine, and bones); relates to overall physical health, stability, and strength 

Psychological and Emotional Characteristics

This chakra gets often associated with our ability to feel safe and secure in the world. This means, if you feel stable and grounded, your Root Chakra is balanced and healthy. 

Depending on its health and balance, it can lead to some emotional traits. 
One trait would be, that it affects our feelings of security, confidence, and self-sufficiency. Also, it is linked to our ability to face life’s challenges with confidence and resilience. With a balanced chakra, we feel strong and capable in our physical body and in the world. 

Signs of a balanced Root Chakra

  • groundedness → feeling secure and stable, emotionally and physically 
  • strong sense of purpose → a clear sense of your role and identity in the world 
  • confidence and self-sufficiency → feeling that your needs are met and that you can provide for yourself 
  • physical vitality → good health, strong bones, and a well-functioning immune system 
  • connected to the earth → a sense of belonging to the planet, the ability to enjoy nature, and an intuitive feeling of being at home in your body and environment

Signs of an imbalanced Root Chakra

  • lead to feelings of insecurity, fear, or anxiety 
  • physical issues → problems with the lower body; may also experience fatigue or chronic illness 
  • emotional or mental issues: 
    • feelings of insecurity, fear, or anxiety about survival, finances, or safety 
    • lack of grounding or feeling disconnected from reality 
    • a lack of stability or constant instability in your life 
    • overwhelm by the demands of daily life, feeling unable to cope 
    • isolation and a feeling of not belonging or being ungrounded 
  • excessive materialism → sometimes can manifest as an obsessive focus on money, status, and material possessions in an attempt to feel secure

Healing and Balancing the Root Chakra

To heal and balance the Root Chakra, there are some exercises you can do: 

  • physical practices 
    • grounding exercises 
    • yoga → especially those poses, that focus on the lower body 
      • mountain pose (Tadasana): stands to establish connection to the earth 
      • warrior poses (Virabhadrasana I, II, III): strenghten the legs and promote a feeling of stability 
      • child’s pose (Balasana): a restful, grounding posture 
      • tree pose (Vrksasana): helps balance and connect with the Earth 
    • exercise and movement 
  • meditation and mindfulness 
    • visualization 
      • visualizing a red energy or a red light at the base of the spine or in the area of the root chakra can help bring attention to the chakra and stimulate its energy 
      • imagine roots extending from the base of your spine into the Earth, grounding you 
    • mantras 
      • repeating mantras like “LAM” (the seed sound of the root chakra) helps vibrate and activate this energy center 
      • chanting or meditating on “LAM” can also help you connect to your sense of safety and belonging 
    • affirmations → to reinforce positive beliefs around security and groundedness 
      • “I am safe, I am secure, and I am grounded” 
      • “I trust in the process of life” 
      • “I have all that I need to survive and thrive” 
  • diet and nutrition 
    • foods that are nourishing and grounding helps to balance the root chakra → root vegetables are particularly beneficial, as are foods that are high in protein 
    • red foods stimulate the root chakra’s energy 
  • crystals and gemstones 
    • Red Jasper → a grounding stone that helps with stability, endurance, and physical vitality 
    • Hematite → a strong grounding stone that brings a sense of calm and stability 
    • Garnet → encourages security and protection while also providing physical and emotional grounding 
    • Black Tourmaline → a powerful protection stone that shields against negative energy and enhances grounding

Root Chakra and the bigger picture

The foundation, upon which the other six chakras build, is about survival, stability, and security. 

When the Root Chakra is balanced and secure, the energy can flow more freely through the other chakras. This leads to greater emotional, mental, and spiritual harmony.
